BALAS Fellows Program Established:

Denise DimonAt the 2010 BALAS Conference in Barcelona, Denise Dimon, University of San Diego, was honored as the first BALAS Fellow in recognition of her contributions to BALAS. Denise began serving on the BALAS Executive Committee in 1987 and co-chaired two BALAS conferences in San Diego (1988 and 2001). She served as the executive director of BALAS for approximately 20 years as well as BALAS President for two years. At the 2010 BALAS Conference Jose de la Torre reflected on her initiatives and the dedication that she had shown to BALAS over the years. Esteban Brenes, BALAS President at that time, and Victoria Jones, current BALAS Executive Director, awarded her with a plaque and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Denise stepped off of the BALAS Executive Committee in 2011.

At the 2012 BALAS Conference in Rio de Janeiro, four additional BALAS Fellows were named for their contributions to the organization and in advancing research related to the region.

BALAS Fellows This included Ricardo Leal (COPPEAD-UFRJ), Robert Grosse (George Mason University), José de la Torre (Florida International University) and Fernando Robles - not pictured (George Washington University).
